During Amsterdam International Fashion Week MLY showed her new winter collection named "Painting Pictures". Emily Hermans presented a variety of styles inspired on her own youth. We especially liked the more casual items and the block patterns in beautiful colour combinations. Of course there were some beautiful stylish and feminine dresses again. Besides the knitwear, MLY is known for, her new collection also contains woven items. We definitely spotted some fantastic items you will find on the shelves for autumn/winter 2010-2011.

Fashion Swap

Fashion swapping parties are hot and happening! It's not only fun and good for your wallet but also very sustainable!
There is so much clothing in the world. And we all want something different every now and then so why not swap?! Last month the first Swap and the City event took place. This event is inspired on the way swapping events are being done in the US. Food and drinks all afternoon and a run for all the great second hand clothing.
beacon's closet is a fashion exchange store in New York. beacon's closet selectively buys, sells, and trades used clothing and accessories, from, to, and with the public, on a walk-in basis. Clothing which is not selected or sold will be donated to charity by beacon's closet. Last weekend, on a snowy sunday afternoon, we had our own fashion swapping party which was a big hit as well. Everyone left with some cool second hand pieces to give a new life to!
Hopefully more of these swapping events keep popping up as this is the way to reduce by re-using in fashion!

Textile dyeing with CO2 saves water

Yesterday Dyecoo won the Herman Wijfels award for their on CO2 working textile dying machine. With this machine textile dyeing will save energy and can be done in a more eco friendly manner. The machine uses less chemicals and dye bases and no water is needed! Normally there is between 150 and 200 liters water needed for the dyeing of 1 kilo textile. If you imagine that on a yearly basis about 60 to 70 billion kilo textile is produced from which half of it will be dyed you can calculate how much water is needed for this. And then we didn't even spoke about the quantities of polluted water that is dumped into nature. With the invention of this new machine the dyeing process time can be done half as fast and there is 30 to 50% less energy needed. But the use of CO2 has more advantages, the quantity of dye bases needed is much lower than when using water. Hopefully this invention will cause a change in the textile sector. Textile multinationals are letting know they are interested in the machine so let's hope this machine will make a positive change.

The change to Fair Trade and Organic cotton is paying off for the farmers and families. In Mali, the biggest cotton country of Africa more and more farmers are taking a step forward towards a production of fair trade and organic cotton.
Last week Max Havelaar and non profit organisation ICCO where on a fact finding mission in Mali. Mali is one of the pourest countries in the world but the long staple makes Mali having one of the best cotton. During their visit Max Havelaar spoke to N'Koro Bagayogo, head of a cooperation of cotton farmers. He is telling that the women could not go to the fields beacuse of the pesticides and even washing the clothes of their men could lead to dead. Villages get into money problems and when the cotton price was low or the crop let down the costs for pesticides and chemical fertilizers could not be paid off. Due to the arrival of Max Havelaar these stories belong to the past for more and more villages in Mali. Because of the work of Max Havelaar the farmers are getting a fixed price for their cotton and production is slowly growing.
For the whole story please check on P+

The Dutch fashion institutes AMFI and ArtEZ organised the symposium Beyond Green we visited today. We where so glad to be here and to get to know this initiative! When we where fashion students five to nine years ago there was not a lot of attention being paid yet to sustainability in fashion. The focus was more on efficiency in regards to quick delivery times and having the lowest costs possible. But things have changed! And such as both the directors of AMFI and ArtEZ mentioned it is very important that fashion students learn about the importance of sustainability as they have the future in their hands. Thinking beyond just the green trend and focussing on working towards sustainable products is part of creating this future.

Last week we where at the premiere of the documentary “the sewing machines must run”. This documentary gave us a good view about the way Studio JUX works in Nepal, and the difficulties they encounter while working in this country. One thing which became very clear was that the Nepali people studio JUX works with are very friendly. But also that Jitske, the designer of studio JUX, needs a lot of patience to work in Nepal. We respect the fact that although it is difficult, Studio JUX keeps producing in Nepal, as it is needed that money is being made there, and brought into Nepal. Studio JUX’s designer is living in Nepal and keeps an eye on the production processes herself.

We are working very hard to get our store ready for the opening 12 September! It's starting to look like a real store, we like it! We tried to use sustainable materials as much as possible. We used very cool Eco wall paper. Our counter has been made from old doors and our coffee table used to be an old train. Most of the furniture we bought is second hand or has been made from recycled materials and the result is great!

Only two more weeks......... We're very excited!

Being fair and organic is cool! In the most funky areas in London you can’t miss the signs organic coffee and the labels in garments telling us these pieces are made in an ethical responsible way. The poeple drinking their coffees in these places and buying these brands do definitely not look dusty. They are young, creative, urban and cool! Thinking about the background of the products we buy is a new way of life. We had some real “you see!” moments in London. “You see; you can definitely still be cool buying fair trade and organic products”. No need to give in on style, the opposite is true. Paying attention to the fairness and eco friendliness of the products you buy enhances your coolness, so says London!

London shopping

We spend a few days in London and got very much inspired! Lots of vintage and cool fair trade and organic brands! These are the shopping areas we LOVE!

Brick lane

This is a great area to spend some time when you’re in London.. Young and hip Londoners are shopping and working on their apple notebooks here. Inspiring vintage stores and stores which stock cool English brands with a focus on ethical production processes are to be found in Brick lane. Great for an organic coffee and delicious pizza is Story Deli. Not to be missed either and next to Story Deli is the place called Cafe1001. Hamburgers from the Barbecue, take away drinks and bites which you can eat at the picknick tables outside or bring inside. In the evening there is a DJ playing funky music. Sometimes there are movie nights or there is a band playing. We totally love the atmosphere. You can take the metro to Liverpool street station and walk to Brick lane from here. You need a map of London.

Portobello road

A lot more touristic but definitely good for shopping and inspiration. Vintage style clothing, antique stores and lots of good organic coffees. A great place to have lunch is Gail’s. If you’r looking for a vintage one of a kind jewelry piece or a second hand Chanel purse this is the place to be! Take the metro to Notting Hill gate and follow the signs into Portobello road.

Camden Market

Alternative, crowded and cool! The most and best vintage shops are to be found here. Also some creative English designers are selling their hand made fashionable pieces in Camden Market. The stores are packed together in old stables, which certainly enhances the atmosphere. It’s young, loud and inspiring! Grab a coctail or beer and hang around here for a while after shopping. Take the metro to Camden Town and follow the crowd.

The financial crisis effects our buying behavior. We believe it might effect our consumer behavior in a positive way as we want our products to be meaningful. The older established brands mostly reflect how much money people have. Today we want the brands we buy to reflect the things we find important in life. Our brands need to tell us their story. Rolf Jensen, the author of the book Dream Society, predicts in the Second Sight magazine that in the future we want our brands to symbolize immaterial values. We will still buy expensive products, which give us a certain status, he says. But this status has to have a meaning. He describes this with terms like honest, from the hart, authenticity and expertise.

There are times your jeans have holes on purpose, because this is fashion or because these holes belong to your style. But other times holes appear because you just can't stop wearing your jeans. From now on we don't have to throw away our favorite jeans anymore when this happens. Thanks to denim therapy all jeans have a chance to get a second life. The denim therapy involves a genuine reconstruction of the original denim material. New cotton thread is selected to come as close to the original denim thread as possible. This thread and stitch are applied to the broken denim area. Denim therapy can not only fix holes but also repair zippers and other unwanted side effects from wearing your favorite jeans so often. So if you have given up your jeans relationship please try denim therapy and your relation will be healed by the denim doctors!

Last Thursday trend forecaster Li Edelkoort presented her vision on the winter 2010/2011 season. Naturally she mentioned the influences of the financial crisis on trends in Fashion. She predicts an emerging middle class "Extreme middle". Not only in society but also in price segmentation and colors. Not everything is black or white but grey is important! Key words are simplicity and uniformity. In her theme monobasics Li focussed on the importance of Fashion Basics. We think these Fashion basics are important in creating a sustainable lifestyle as well!

For summer 2011 Li Edelkoort already gave away the importance of flowing fabrics and shapes. Her next presentation will take place January 11th 2010.

The greatest sneakers which are eco friendly as well as fair trade! We love them! They are comfi, funky, made of very nice materials and they have a story to tell. The founders were inspired to start the Veja project because they asked themselves one question. Is another world possible? Veja has been built on the main principles that 1. ecological inputs are being used 2. fair trade cotton and latex is being used, and 3. workers’ dignity is respected. Because of the materials used to make our funky Vejas the company fights against deforestation in the Amazon forest in Brazil. A fair price is being paid to the cotton growers and the rubber collectors in Brazil. The people constructing the Veja sneakers work under good conditions and are able to buy their own house. Once in France Veja works with the organization Ateliers Sans Frontières for the storage and delivery of the Veja sneakers. After that we come in; choosing Veja sneakers over other brands because 1. we like them, 2. we know where they come from and 3. because this brand does make another world, where we still look our best and which is more sustainable for everyone, possible!

Reuse, Reduce and Recycle!

In New York city Jill Danyelle's personal fashion project fiftyRX3 was a project in style and sustainability. It consisted of a photo documentary of what Jill Danyelle wore everyday for a year, with a goal of averaging fifty percent sustainability. Her principles are simple; to reuse-something not bought new, to reduce-by choosing products made with environmentally friendly production methods and to recycle-making garments from a previously existing item.
Jill Danyelle designed the first dress made out of umbrellas. These umbrellas were collected from the streets of NYC. The dress already inspired others to develop better and more sustainable umbrellas. Jill Danyelle also explored the relationship we have with our clothing and how others perceive who we are through what we wear. Promoting and sharing ideas about sustainability in the apparel industry became a big part of project fiftyRX3. We think this is a very interesting project, which shows us there is no need at all to stick to outdated images of green design. Just have a look at the stylish umbrella dress in the picture below!

Last Tuesday we where at a meeting organized by Streetlab and Yoi. Annouk Post, the founder of YOI and Hiphonest.com, held an inspiring presentation about what sustainable design is. Sustainable design is all about looking, feeling and doing good! It is about a new luxury, about quality and slowing down, about being Hiphonest. Annouk explained the concept of respect for people and planet, and what we need to achieve this in the fashion industry, by S values. She explained for example that we need Statements like "No more Fashion Victims" used on the T-shirts of Katharine Hammett.

Also we have to be Sincere. Doing good for 100% is not possible yet. But what we can do already is telling the real story. An example of this is the numbers Studio Jux uses in their garments. These numbers indicate who made the garment we bought and we can meet the maker on the website of Studio Jux. Another S used by Annouk is the S of Slowing down. This is a trend which has already been there in the food industry. Next to Slow food we are getting more into Slow fashion as well. Fast fashion is associated with a lack of quality and not being very sustainable. The S of Secondary makes us think about what happens with our garments or shoes once we wore them. Then there is the S of forgotten Secrets which stands for getting back to old production methods in the fashion industry. Or the S of Sharing which might be the most important S. If we share our thoughts and the information we have we can make a big step forward in this world in transition.

Recent research done by Shirley Technologies (STL) tells us that a cheap T-shirt will cost us eventually more than a T-shirt of better quality. The research suggests that we wear clothing of a better quality more often than we would wear the same product in a cheaper variation. We buy four times a new T-shirt of less quality in the same period as we would buy one T-shirt of a better quality. For the production of these garments this implicates that this will cost four times as much water and chemicals. This is something to think about when we go shopping!

We came across the website of organic jeans brand NU. We like their philosophy and share their thoughts. We totally agree with the reasons the founders give on their website, why they started with NU jeans. That's why we list them for you here. We need fair and ethical brands because...... Consumption is our main leverage to act over the world, because the production of garments is a major cause of pollution and men exploitation in the world, because ethical wear is not for hippies and yogis only, because it is up to us to make things change and because it’s now or never! Following are the ten commandments of NU jeans. Take some time and think about them!
1. When you have something to say SAY IT!
2. Buy less BUY BETTER!
3. Grow PLANTS!
4. Wear your CLOTHES to death!
5. Never forget you are an ANIMAL!
6. Stop eating CRAPS!
7. Fight for your IDEAS!
8. Fix your OLD BICYCLE!
9. Take some time everyday TO THINK!
10. Breathe DEEPLY!

There is a word for the products we stand for. Hiphonest introduced by Annouk Post totally covers our concept. Fashion and other creative products which are created with respect for people and planet. ‘Hip’ stands for something fashionable and trendsetting whereas ‘honest’ stands for respect for people and planet. The idea behind the website is to start a conversation about the Hiphonest lifestyle. On the website you can find blogs about the developments of fashion labels and design products, which already are, or aim to be Hip and Honest. This is a good opportunity to monitor how the Hiphonest community is developing.

Made in Bangladesh

At the Clean&Unique "Passion" meeting last thursday Kalpona Akter from Bangladesh, former worker in a textile factory, told us her story. Kalpona has been working for years in a textile factory and is now working for the Bangladesh Center for Workers Solidarity. When Kalpona was 12,5 years old she started working in the textile factory to support her family. She started with a salary of €3,- per month. She told us during the meeting that there were lots of days, when she was making more than 20 hours. On these days she did not even have time to go home and sleep or shower between working days.

There was only one toiletcard for fifty people, which the supervisor kept. When someone needed to go to the toilet permission had to be asked from the supervisor. Nowadays the minimum wage in textile factories in Bangladesh rose to about €20,- a month. Ninety percent of the companies pays it's workers in time, and cases of physical and sexual harassment decreased in recent years. So some change luckily came already. This is achieved because workers and consumers wanted this Kalpona explained us. In 2006 there was an enormous rise from workers in Bangladesh, as at the same time from the other side consumers where putting pressure on western brands. But more change is still needed Kalpona assures us. And help of consumers is very much needed. Boycotting products from Bangladesh will not help the people in Bangladesh, as 76% of the export products in Bangladesh are garments, Kalpona explained. But it does help if we keep putting pressure on the brands and companies, who buy and produce their products in Bangladesh, to take their responsibility. Kalpona is now telling her story when she is travelling through Europe to inform consumers here about the working circumstances in Bangladesh. In Bangladesh she educates workers regarding their rights and encourages them to join labour parties. We were very much impressed by Kalpona's story and her as a person. Let us all give her a hand and wonder where and how are garments are made when we buy them.

Carbon footprint label for clothing

The UK fashion retail market has claimed the world’s first carbon footprint label for clothing. Continental Clothing, described as an ethical and eco-chic manufacturer, working with Carbon Trust, is launching the world’s first Carbon Reduction Label for textile products. Consumers will for the first time learn about the carbon footprint of their clothing. The label will be displayed on a range of printed T-shirts and sweatshirts, and will inform us of the total lifecycle footprint as well as our own contribution through washing, tumble-drying and ironing.

The label is a great way to give us clear information about the environmental impact of the clothes we own, throughout their entire lifecycle. It will also show how reductions can be achieved through changing our washing, drying and ironing routines. The "footprinting" study has shown that as much as half of the total footprint of clothing can come from our home laundry activities, particularly our tumble-drying, which produces twice the emissions of automatic washing. Avoiding tumble-drying and ironing could reduce the total footprint by as much as one third overall. The project is part of Defra's action plan for sustainable clothing launched at last month's London Fashion Week by Sustainability Minister Lord Hunt.

Trend forecast Second Sight

At the last Clean&Unique meeting, which took place last Thursday in Amsterdam, Andrea Wiegman from the trendwatch community Second Sight gave an inspiring presentation. In today's society we are buying certain products with a reason. We want these products to add value to our lifes. There is a shift from the focus on "hunting" to the focus on "attention". Which means that we want to take care of the things which are already there in the world. After a time of only consuming, it is time for a new consciousness regarding non material things in life. We are living in a time, where we have too much of everything. Our waste is piling up, which was very well visualized by the Louis Vuitton garbage bag. We are asking questions and the answer to this is Storytelling. If a brand does not give an answer to these questions we will make up our own story. This symbolizes that it is a time of sharing. The focus is not on "I" but on "We", because together we can shape the future. Authenticity is very important. Companies and brands who are real are appreciated. Status symbols are changing as well. The Green Wheel was for example indicated as a new status symbol. Andrea explained that at the moment it is impossible for trend watchers to predict the future, as there are so many changes going on in the world. This does leave a lot of openings for us to let the brands and companies we buy from know what we expect from them.

Sustainable Fashion & Textiles: Design Journeys

Design Journeys, written by Kate Fletcher, is a great book for everyone who is interested in fashion and sustainability. The book explores sustainability issues in the fashion industry from the design perspective in it’s broadest sense. It offers everyone an insight in what can be done during the whole life cycle of a fashion product to make the process more sustainable. This starts for example by choosing the fabric of the garment in the design process. It ends with the temperature the garment is being washed at and the way the garment is disposed of by it’s end user. The book shows us that there definitely are a lot of ways in which we can integrate environmental and social quality in the design, production and and use of fashion and textiles.
